The UA&P orientation for admitted scholars held last February 26, titled “Stellar Launch 2022”, highlighted the recently established Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr. Scholarship Endowment (PLM Grant). Here are three things you need to know about this prestigious scholarship.
- It is named after the one and only Chairman of the Center for Research and Communication (CRC) and its successor institution, the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), until his demise on May 5, 2019, at the age of 86.
During his 52 years with CRC/UA&P, those who worked with Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr. “benefited immensely from (his) wisdom, prudence, and professionalism” (Villegas, 2021). A Harvard alumnus, Dr. Mapa is well-known as an institution builder in the Philippines, having occupied key positions in both the public and private sectors, to wit: 2nd Director General (1981), after Gerardo Sicat, of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA); Governor of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), 1977; President of the Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company (Metrobank), 1989; President of the Philippine National Bank (PNB), 1983; and President of the Philippine Economic Society, 1965.
- The PLM Grant is a merit scholarship that comes with three additional benefits: a laptop, a non-tuition grant, and coaching from no less than the members of the Board of Trustees of UA&P.
The University has been offering merit scholarship for years, which may cover up to 100% of tuition fees based on the entrance exam scores and school grades of the applicant. The PLM Grant, however, aims to provide student grantees not only with 100% coverage of tuition and miscellaneous fees but also a 10-month stipend of Php8,000, a monthly internet allowance of Php1,000, a laptop, and an exclusive professional development coach from UA&P’s Board of Trustees.
- Only the top five merit scholars with exemplary leadership qualities and potential to be catalysts for change in their community—as Dr. Placido L. Mapa, Jr. exemplified—shall qualify for it.
From this year’s 300 scholarship applicants, 25 have been awarded merit scholarships. Fifteen of them were invited for a second round of interview for the PLM Scholarship. From the 15 interviewed, five have already been chosen as PLM grantees. The chosen five must give their confirmation until March 15, 2022.
The PLM grant is open to incoming 6YP students and college freshmen only. Current merit scholars in the higher batches cannot apply for the PLM grant.
The Fund Development Office (FDO), which oversees the PLM Grant, would gladly accept referrals of prospective major donors to this project. For inquiries, please email [email protected]. Online donations are also accepted here.
